Shimza brings African dance music to the centre of Ibiza
An eight-week Pacha residency placed South African artists and Afrocentric club sounds at the heart of the island's international season.

Shimza closed an eight-week residency at Pacha Ibiza with a programme designed to place African dance music and its creative community at the centre of the room. The South African DJ used Shimza & Co not only as a headline platform, but also as a way to bring collaborators and peers into one of the island's most established clubs.
Across the season, guests included South African artists Darque and Tenoceans alongside international names such as Damian Lazarus, Alex Wann and GORDO. Tyla joined the closing night, connecting global pop visibility with the wider ecosystem of Afro house, Afrotech and amapiano that Shimza has supported through his label, events and other ventures.
The residency represents a major international step for an artist who is already a star at home. Shimza told Mixmag that working abroad can feel like starting again, even after years of achievement in South Africa. That perspective shapes a project built around loyalty and a team that has grown with him from local events to global stages.
The cultural shift is not without tension. African styles are increasingly prominent in Ibiza, but the artists and audiences who created those sounds do not always have equal access to the island. Travel, visa requirements, accommodation costs and exchange rates continue to influence who can participate.
Shimza's Pacha season matters because it places African artists in control of the context, not only the soundtrack. Clubbase based this report on Mixmag's feature by Shiba Melissa Mazaza. The complete original, including its interviews and photography credits, is linked below.
